Above is an example of a contemporary poetry broadside from a collection on the website of the most famous bookstore to be associated with a literary movement in American history. I refer to the amazing City Lights books in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco, the headquarters of the Beat Generation since its inception.
Here's a short film celebrating several Beat Generation writers who are still alive.
Your original broadside is due on or before our next class meeting, November 11, at the start of class. Do not print it yourself. Submit it as a PDF. You can either email the file to me (csmith@dcad.edu) or you can bring it to class and drop it on a folder on the classroom computer desktop via flashdrive.
During class on Monday each student will pull up his/her/their broadside on the big screen, and we'll conduct a critique. We will read the text out loud and consider its formal properties. How does the text/image interplay work? What's successful? What might be improved? Be ready to ask questions and provide comments that drive the discussion forward.
Your broadside should have the following elements:
1. A title
2. An original literary text (I recommend typography instead of handwriting)
3. Imagery (can be appropriated from another source if you like)
4. A colophon (this is the information that lists the author, place, date, and other bibliographic information). In most broadsides this is a small line of text at the base or on the side of the print.
Have fun doing this project. If you have any questions, send me an email message at csmith@dcad.edu or find me in the corridors.
Maybe we'll take a poll at the conclusion of class on Monday in an effort to determine which broadside the class collectively thinks is best.
