In many ways, Russian artists and graphic designers in the first decades of the 20th century prefigured some of the elements of the Concrete Poetry. They both understood language as a material form and the alphabet itself as a visual repertoire. This link is to a brochure produced by the Museum of Modern Art for an exhibition in 2002. The marks of language signify in this work, but they share the page/canvas with other images.
