I apologize for the slight confusion that some students experienced concerning this essay. The three items that I wrote under the heading "discussion" were meant to be examples of the kinds of topics/positions that someone might use to approach "The Dead" not an actual essay prompt(s).
Please find your own central idea (a/k/a thesis or argument), and remember to relate it to your own life. Use Joyce's story as a springboard to explore your ideas and experiences.
Congratulations on finishing your draft.
Some of you will have a substantial amount of revision and editing to do before handing in your final version on Wednesday afternoon. Some of you will require a minimal amount of work to get your paper in shape. In both cases, I'll be free to help as the Writers Studio tutor tomorrow from 9 to 1. Emma Lena will be the tutor on Wednesday morning from 9 to 1, and Caitlin Rooney will be on duty from 1 to 4. Please take advantage of this service.
Here's a link to a good audiobook version of "The Dead".

PEER EDITING GUIDELINES
1) Remember that your primary job is to help your classmates, not to criticize or find fault.
2) Focus on the bigger issues concerning the paper's argument (thesis) and structure. You can point out the smaller issues, typically grammar, spelling, and punctuation, but don't focus on them exclusively.
3) If you point out a problem, try to include a possible solution. Maybe more textual evidence is needed, or maybe the writer needs to explain why a particular quotation or example fits the paper's thesis.
4) Fill out the worksheet with specific, not general, information. Try to be helpful, as you would want to be helped.
5) Staple the worksheets to the back of your essay. Remember to staple this packet to the back of your final essay on Wednesday. Your submission on Wednesday will consist of your final printed version on top, the draft you brought to class on Monday, and the two peer-editing worksheets on the bottom.
