Discussion
What is the purpose of so much finely rendered detail. Consider the paragraph describing the feast in "The Dead"?

Why did Joyce hate/love Ireland? How is this conveyed in the figure of Gabriel?

What happens to the attentive reader at the end of the story? Do women end up feeling like Gretta, men like Gabriel? Both? Neither? How about you?

Essay Draft Due This MONDAY, September 30 at start of class.

You will be workshopping this paper with your classmates, probably in groups of three. Your draft should have the following features:

A hook: intro device that gets us into your essay. Maybe a question, maybe an example from here and now, maybe something else.

A thesis (or controlling idea): This should be not obvious. It should represent your ideas about the story or stories, and it should be arguable. In other words, could an intelligent person disagree with your thesis? (the hook and the thesis should appear in your first paragraph).

Counter-argument: What reasons would they have for their disagreements? This is called counter-argument. Acknowledge the existence and partial validity of this other position, but end with why your interpretation is better. (one paragraph)

Evidence from the text: Remember to use signal phrases to introduce quotations. Also remember to process your evidence. Tell your reader directly why you chose to include it. End your body paragraphs with your own words. Save your best evidence for your final body paragraph. (2-3 paragraphs)

Conclusion: Why do the ideas you put forth still have relevance in your life in 2019. Connect your experience with Joyce's fiction. Does it speak to you and others living today? How and why. Has human nature changed? (1 paragraph)
