Final Short Essay: Reflection &
Projection
What is the
role of “literature” in the world that you live in today? Has it changed since
the time of your grandparents? Since the time of Emily Dickinson? Since the
time of Shakespeare? Has literature outlived its function? With the advent of
readily accessible digital technology (sound, imagery, motion, VR, AR, etc) is
traditional literature outdated, past its prime? Is it like the horse and buggy
of culture? Some might answer affirmatively. Others, however, might contend
that there is something universal and timeless about traditional modes of
literary expression, that the vehicles of ink and paper will always endure,
that storytelling is basically the same as it has always been, a way of
integrating people and their societies, an escape from the dreariness of
everyday life, etc.
What do you
think and feel about this issue? Use examples of authors and texts that we’ve
encountered this semester. Feel free to find your own way with this paper. Don’t
forget to give it a lively and meaningful title. As always revise it and
proofread it carefully before submitting it. Lastly, have fun writing it.
