Borges: Genius Writer, Horrible Man
By all accounts, Jorge Luis Borges was kind of a jerk. Politically, he cozied up to dictators such as Chile's notorious Augusto Pinochet. Georgie, as his friends called him, was also a snob who looked down on poor and uneducated people, a misogynist (Mommy's boy) who didn't believe that women could be as smart as men, a racist and anti-Semite, etc. He might not have been as despicable as Ezra Pound, but that's setting the bar awfully low. I found this review of a book about his short-lived marriage, and thought I would pass it on to you. I'm not sure of the value of this kind of literary gossip, but like all gossip it's kind of fun.
