What is Close Reading?

We've discussed the fact that reading poetry is really different from reading prose (stories, essays, articles, etc.). Your one page single-spaced essay due on Monday should compare and contrast a single poem by two different poets.

1. Choose two: Yeats, Eliot, Pound, Stein
2. Choose one poem from each of your chosen poets (it can be any poem, not just the ones assigned in class).
3. The two poems you analyze might be really similar or really different.
4. Based on your close reading, which poem is more successful? Why?
5. Make your writing relevant to life in 2018.

This page on the Purdue OWL does a good job of explaining the basics of close reading.
