Unit One: Minimalism, Fragmentation, and Repetition



We started the class last week by considering the work of Aram Saroyan, especially his one-word poems such as his famous, "Lighght." He wrote and published his poems at the height of the Conceptual Art movement in the US, the mid-1960s. His work shares some similarities with Donald Judd and Dan Flavin. All of them are involved in an examination of the underlying and shifting principles of art, poetry, and culture. They are more interested in asking questions than providing answers.
