Today is LetterFest!
Break into three groups (3-4 people per group).
This is your team for today's exercises. We're going down to the 2nd floor.
I will be taking photos, videos, sound files. However, I'd like all of you to also take documentary photos. Thanks.
Everybody needs to promise that they are going to try to have fun. OK?
Exercise A
Concrete Poetry: Assemble the concrete letters into shapes or words or phrases or stacks or spills, or whatever shapes your hearts desire. Try to make at least ten. Remember to have each one documented before you tear it down and start over.
Exercise B
Language Mural: Using only letterforms (upper and lower-case), cover your mural-sized piece of craft paper with language, no punctuation, just the 26 letters that we use in English. If your group wants to make a second mural go for it. Don't overthink this. Take photos of the entire piece and also close-ups of details.
Exercise C
Collective Run-On: On receipt tape, each student write ten statements that begin with the words: "and then I...". Your statement can be based in reality, fantasy, surrealism, political action, humor, whatever. After they are all written, assemble them randomly by taping them one to the next until your group is all out of strips. With your one massively long strip, lay it down flat in good even light if possible. With the video function of your phone or camera, slowly walk along your strip trying to keep the text more or less in the center of the frame. This will produce the effect of language crawling across the screen.
