Slight Change of Plans

Please pay close attention to the following message:

Most, but not all, of the first two essays (1. Whitman/ Dickinson, and 2. Wilde) suffered from a pronounced lack of planning, revising, and editing. It seemed that many of these essays were written on the fly. This is why most of them felt like responses, not essays with crafted arguments. Many of these responses had smart things to say, but the way the author (you) went about it showed a disrespect for me as a reader and DCAD as an institution of higher learning. It's a frustrating situation.

Therefore, we're going to spend more time on our next one-page essay.

This Wednesday, September 25, we'll spend the whole period discussing the two James Joyce stories I assigned last week, and how to go about about planning and structuring an essay that reflects your reading and understanding of them. Your assignment is to read the two stories carefully and to come to class ready for discussion. There will certainly be a quiz.

Next Monday, September 30, you will bring a finished draft of your essay to class for work-shopping purposes. This needs to be a full essay, not a set of notes or a half-assed cobbled together group of paragraphs.

Next Wednesday, October 2, you will bring a revised and polished essay to class, with a copy of the draft you turned in on Monday stapled to the back of it. No exceptions. On that day, we'll hold another visual critique, and we'll be able to gauge the difference.
