Short Assignment Four: Race and Language

DCAD ENG201-3

Short Essay 4:  Language, Race, and Racism

In this unit we’ll be reading an essay by the incomparable James Baldwin (in my mind the best American writer, period), a short story by Toni Morrison, a meta-fictional poem/text by Jamaica Kinkaid, and a short story by the Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. Read the work in the Norton Anthology by these four writers for Monday’s class. Be mentally prepared for a vigorous discussion about race and language in the America of 2018.

Your one-page single-spaced essay is due on Wednesday. I don’t want to prescribe a certain way or path for you to take in this essay. You can focus on one or more of the above-named authors. I don’t recommend using more than two writers, because the space of the page is limited. Your essay should use textual evidence taken directly from the literature, and it should make connections to your evolving ideas about the role of language in the formation/eradication of racism.

Of course, this is contentious and difficult material, and it’s not easy to talk about it. But we need to talk about it. Your generation is going to discover solutions that my generation has so far failed to discover. Feel free to tie in current events... Black Lives Matter, DJT, etc.
