Short
Essay Two: Yeats, Eliot, Pound, and Stein
We
read and studied four poets in this unit: WB Yeats, TS Eliot, Ezra Pound, and
Gertrude Stein. They all knew each other and were influenced by each other,
although Yeats was the oldest. In your one page single-spaced essay, choose two
poets (and one poem by each) to compare and contrast. You are free to choose
any poem, not only the ones represented in our required reading. Think about
poetic technique (how they write, their approach to language, etc.) and also what
they write (themes, ideas, etc.) You must use direct quotations from the poems.
During Monday’s class we’re going to talk briefly about how writing about
poetry is slightly different than writing about other literary forms.
